Sherri Vogt is a small person with a big voice---and she's ready to speak up in Hartford for her district. "Working the last three sessions for the Connecticut General Assembly was a real eye-opener. I saw many important bills pushed aside because they lacked a strong voice behind them and realized, I can be that voice for the people of this district."
Sherri, a 6th Generation Brooklyn native, has lived in the area for most of her life, leaving only for a 4-year tour in the U.S Army. After serving as a petroleum supply specialist and a truck driver in Germany, she returned to Eastern Connecticut and attended QVCC and ECSU with the assistance of her GI Bill to complete her degree in history and social studies with a certificate in secondary education. She then taught social studies and history at the Rectory School in Pomfret for 2 years, leaving after the birth of her second child. For the next 10 years she devoted her time to her family, and community, volunteering for the PTO, cub scouts, girl scouts, political campaigns, and at her church.
During this time, Sherri learned one of her children had developmental issues and would require not only a range of services, but someone to be her child's voice in the educational world. Sherri accepted this role, and from the multiple challenges she's faced, she has learned it is a combination of hard work and a strong voice that gets results. Three years ago, when it was time for her to return to work, Sherri decided to look for a career which would allow her to use the advocacy skills she'd developed to benefit her community and accepted a part-time position as an assistant clerk in the state legislature where she worked for the Select Committee on Children, the Commerce Committee and the Environment Committee.
Sherri wants to work full-time for Connecticut families and businesses and says she's ready to roll up her sleeves and get to work on important issues like children's safety, job growth and stewardship of our natural resources. |
